Students Use AI as a Supporting Tool in Writing Their Final Task

Tangerang, November 26 - The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a supporting tool in writing final theses has become increasingly common among undergraduate students. Many students utilize AI to assist with outlining ideas, improving grammar, and organizing references, while maintaining personal responsibility for academic content.

A final-year student from the English Education Department stated that AI is helpful, especially during the early stages of thesis writing.
“AI helps me create an outline and check grammar,” the student said briefly.

However, the student emphasized that the core ideas, analysis, and arguments must still come from personal understanding to avoid academic misconduct.

From an academic perspective, a thesis supervisor explained that AI should only function as a technical assistant.
“AI can support the writing process, but it must not replace students’ critical thinking,” the lecturer stated.

The lecturer added that students are expected to fully understand their research and be able to explain their work during supervision and thesis examinations.

The growing use of AI in higher education reflects a broader trend. According to a report published by Kompas, universities are gradually adapting to AI by reviewing academic policies and encouraging responsible use of technology in learning activities. The report highlights that while AI offers efficiency, universities must also safeguard academic integrity and originality.

Based on the University Academic Handbook (2024), the use of digital tools in academic activities is permitted as long as it adheres to principles of honesty, originality, and ethical conduct. However, specific regulations regarding AI usage in thesis writing remain limited.

This phenomenon indicates that AI has become part of the academic writing process. Nevertheless, educators emphasize that AI should remain a supporting tool, not a substitute for students’ intellectual effort and responsibility.

Understanding News Writing Clearly

Tangerang, November 17th 2025 – Group 1 of Class 7A1 from Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang delivered a presentation on “Understanding News Writing” during learning session. The presentation introduced students to the basics of writing factual and structured news, focusing on clarity, objectivity, and the use of the inverted pyramid style.

The presenters explained that news writing serves several public functions, including providing information, educating society, acting as social control, and documenting events. They also highlighted the structure of a news story, beginning from the headline, followed by the lead, body, and closing. The group provided examples of effective headlines and demonstrated how the 5W + 1H formula helps journalists write strong and concise leads.

During the presentation, the audience actively participated in the discussion. One student, Sahrul raised a question regarding clickbait in online news, asking whether sensational or exaggerated headlines are still considered part of ethical journalism. One of the presenters, Gibran responded by emphasizing that, although clickbait might attract readers, news writers should prioritize accuracy and avoid misleading the public.

Group 1 also discussed the inverted pyramid style, explaining that the most important information should appear at the beginning of the news so readers can quickly understand the main point. This technique is widely used in digital journalism, where audiences tend to skim rather than read entire articles.

The presentation concluded with a reminder that journalistic language must remain brief, clear, and objective. Students were encouraged to practice writing news stories using the structure and strategies introduced.

The session ended positively, with students gaining a better understanding of how to write reliable and responsible news.

Ittiba at UMT: Valuable but Needs Fixes

The Ittiba program, a mandatory requirement for seventh-semester students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang (UMT), aims to strengthen Islamic and Muhammadiyah values through two key stages: a preparation session and a comprehensive examination. The initiative reflects the university’s commitment to shaping students not only as academic achievers but also as individuals rooted in Islamic character.

While the objectives of Ittiba are commendable and deserve full support, its technical management still needs improvement. Several students reported confusion caused by sudden classroom changes and unexpected schedule adjustments. These disruptions affected participants’ readiness and reduced the overall learning comfort, even though the program’s content was highly relevant and beneficial for their spiritual and organizational understanding.

To ensure that Ittiba reaches its intended impact, scheduling and logistical information should be communicated more clearly and through a consistent, centralized channel. Better coordination would allow students to follow the program with greater focus and appreciation. Strengthening the technical management of Ittiba will enable it to serve as a truly meaningful character-building experience not merely a mandatory requirement, but a formative stage in the personal and intellectual development of UMT students.

Ongoing Road Repairs in Teluknaga

Tangerang Regency – The Tangerang Regency Government continues road repair work on the Teluknaga route, which has been severely damaged. The project began in early November and is still ongoing along the section from the front of Labschool to the Saelan area.

The road damage occurred due to frequent passage of heavily loaded soil trucks operating around the area. The excessive weight of these vehicles caused multiple potholes to form, creating discomfort and safety risks for road users traveling through the route.

The repair work has affected traffic flow. Vehicles are required to slow down and take turns passing through the narrowed road sections, resulting in long queues, especially during morning and late afternoon peak hours. As a result, travel time for residents has increased compared to normal conditions before the repair work started.

The Tangerang Regency Government urges motorists to remain cautious and consider using alternative routes while the repairs are still in progress. The infrastructure work aims to improve road safety and prevent similar damage from recurring in the near future.

As of the time this report is published, the road repair project in Teluknaga is still underway and is expected to continue for the next several weeks.
