Students Use AI as a Supporting Tool in Writing Their Final Task

 


Tangerang, November 26 - The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a supporting tool in writing final theses has become increasingly common among undergraduate students. Many students utilize AI to assist with outlining ideas, improving grammar, and organizing references, while maintaining personal responsibility for academic content.

A final-year student from the English Education Department stated that AI is helpful, especially during the early stages of thesis writing.
“AI helps me create an outline and check grammar,” the student said briefly.

However, the student emphasized that the core ideas, analysis, and arguments must still come from personal understanding to avoid academic misconduct.

From an academic perspective, a thesis supervisor explained that AI should only function as a technical assistant.
“AI can support the writing process, but it must not replace students’ critical thinking,” the lecturer stated.

The lecturer added that students are expected to fully understand their research and be able to explain their work during supervision and thesis examinations.

The growing use of AI in higher education reflects a broader trend. According to a report published by Kompas, universities are gradually adapting to AI by reviewing academic policies and encouraging responsible use of technology in learning activities. The report highlights that while AI offers efficiency, universities must also safeguard academic integrity and originality.

Based on the University Academic Handbook (2024), the use of digital tools in academic activities is permitted as long as it adheres to principles of honesty, originality, and ethical conduct. However, specific regulations regarding AI usage in thesis writing remain limited.

This phenomenon indicates that AI has become part of the academic writing process. Nevertheless, educators emphasize that AI should remain a supporting tool, not a substitute for students’ intellectual effort and responsibility.
