Digital Fatigue Is Real, Even for Gen Z

I believe digital fatigue is real and sometimes dangerous. As part of Gen Z, I grew up surrounded by screens. Phones, laptops, notifications, and online platforms are deeply embedded in my daily life. Yet the more connected I become, the more exhausted I often feel.

Digital fatigue is not only about tired eyes or headaches. It affects mental health. Constant notifications, endless scrolling, and the pressure to stay online create mental overload. Even when I am not actively using my phone, my mind feels alert and restless, as if it is always waiting for something to happen.

There are moments when I realize how difficult it has become to truly rest. I open my phone to relax, but instead of feeling calm, I feel overwhelmed. Social media feeds never stop updating, messages demand quick replies, and digital tasks blur the boundary between academic responsibilities and personal time.

What concerns me most is how normal this exhaustion has become. Feeling tired after long screen exposure is often ignored or accepted as part of modern life. Many people, including myself, blame a lack of discipline rather than questioning the digital environment itself. In reality, constant exposure reduces focus, lowers motivation, and increases anxiety.

In some situations, digital fatigue can be harmful. It disrupts sleep, shortens attention span, and creates emotional restlessness. When the brain never fully disconnects, burnout becomes difficult to avoid. This is why I believe digital detox is necessary.

Digital detox does not mean rejecting technology. It means setting healthy boundaries. Turning off unnecessary notifications, reducing screen time before sleep, and allowing moments without digital interruption can help restore mental balance. Even small breaks can make a meaningful difference.

Technology is essential for Gen Z. However, being comfortable with technology does not mean being immune to its effects. Recognizing digital fatigue and intentionally stepping away from screens is an act of self care. Sometimes, disconnecting is not a weakness, but a way to protect our well being.
